Severe material and social deprivation rate (annual, Europe)

Annual severe material and social deprivation (SMSD) rate - the share of the population lacking at least 7 of 13 basic items (material goods and social activities) because they cannot afford them - for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset ilc_mdsd02 ('Material and social deprivation by household composition and income quintile'), filtered to freq=A, hhcomp=TOTAL ('All household compositions'), quant_inc=TOTAL ('All income quintiles'), unit=PC ('Percentage'). Each row is one (year, country). Method: Eurostat compiles EU-SILC microdata transmitted by the member states; the SMSD indicator counts deprivation over 13 items (6 personal, 7 household-level) with the threshold at 7 or more. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries (the UK, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: percent of the total population. Caveats: the deprivation item list was revised with the 2015 EU-SILC overhaul, so pre-2014 values are not comparable; national EU-SILC redesigns create series breaks for some countries (flagged in Eurostat metadata); the UK and Kosovo are dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule; the EU27_2020 and EA20 aggregates are included as published.
