  • Eurostat

Severe material and social deprivation rate (annual, Europe)

Annual severe material and social deprivation (SMSD) rate - the share of the population lacking at least 7 of 13 basic items (material goods and social activities) because they cannot afford them - for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset ilc_mdsd02 ('Material and social deprivation by household composition and income quintile'), filtered to freq=A, hhcomp=TOTAL ('All household compositions'), quant_inc=TOTAL ('All income quintiles'), unit=PC ('Percentage'). Each row is one (year, country). Method: Eurostat compiles EU-SILC microdata transmitted by the member states; the SMSD indicator counts deprivation over 13 items (6 personal, 7 household-level) with the threshold at 7 or more. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries (the UK, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: percent of the total population. Caveats: the deprivation item list was revised with the 2015 EU-SILC overhaul, so pre-2014 values are not comparable; national EU-SILC redesigns create series breaks for some countries (flagged in Eurostat metadata); the UK and Kosovo are dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule; the EU27_2020 and EA20 aggregates are included as published. Coverage: ~44 geographic units after the geo rule, 2014 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates EU-SILC indicators in autumn. Sample use: filter country_code='ROU' to track material deprivation in Romania over time.

SMSD rate by educational attainment, annual (Europe)

Annual severe material and social deprivation (SMSD) rate - the share of the population lacking at least 7 of 13 basic items (material goods and social activities) because they cannot afford them - for the 16-64 population (both sexes), split by educational attainment, for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset ilc_mdsd03 ('Material and social deprivation by educational attainment level, age and sex'), filtered to freq=A, isced11 in (ED0-2 'Less than primary, primary and lower secondary education (levels 0-2)', ED3_4 'Upper secondary and post-secondary non-tertiary education (levels 3 and 4)', ED5-8 'Tertiary education (levels 5-8)'), age=Y16-64 ('From 16 to 64 years'), sex=T ('Total'), unit=PC ('Percentage'). Each row is one (year, country, attainment level). Units: percent of the 16-64 population at the attainment level. Caveats: the deprivation item list was revised with the 2015 EU-SILC overhaul, so pre-2014 values are not comparable; attainment is the highest completed ISCED 2011 level; the UK and Kosovo are dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule; the EU27_2020 and EA aggregates are included as published. Coverage: ~44 geographic units after the geo rule, 2014 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, attainment_level). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates EU-SILC indicators in autumn. Sample use: filter attainment_level='ED5-8' to compare deprivation among tertiary-educated adults across countries.

SMSD rate by labour status, annual (Europe)

Annual severe material and social deprivation (SMSD) rate - the share of the population lacking at least 7 of 13 basic items (material goods and social activities) because they cannot afford them - for the working-age population (16-64, both sexes), split by labour status, for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset ilc_mdsd01 ('Material and social deprivation by labour status, age and sex'), filtered to freq=A, wstatus in (EMP 'Employed persons', UNE 'Unemployed persons', NEMP 'Not employed persons'), age=Y16-64 ('From 16 to 64 years'), sex=T ('Total'), unit=PC ('Percentage'). Each row is one (year, country, labour status). Units: percent of the 16-64 population in the labour-status group. Caveats: the deprivation item list was revised with the 2015 EU-SILC overhaul, so pre-2014 values are not comparable; labour status follows the ILO definition used in EU-SILC; the UK and Kosovo are dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule; the EU27_2020 and EA aggregates are included as published. Coverage: ~44 geographic units after the geo rule, 2014 to the present, annual.
