  • Eurostat

Mean age of women at childbirth (annual, Europe)

Annual mean age of women at childbirth - the average age of mothers giving birth in the given year - for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset demo_find ('Fertility indicators'), filtered to freq=A, indic_de=AGEMOTH ('Mean age of women at childbirth'). Each row is one (year, country). Method: Eurostat compiles the indicator from national vital-statistics registers; it is a period mean over all births in the year, all birth orders combined. Units: years. Caveats: the mean rises with first-birth postponement - pair it with the total-fertility-rate dataset to separate the tempo effect (delayed births) from the quantum effect (fewer births); national breaks in vital-statistics series are flagged in Eurostat metadata; early years are sparse for newer member and candidate countries. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries (the UK, Kosovo, Russia, Belarus) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Coverage: 45 geographic units after the geo rule, 1960 to the present (1,892 observations), annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the demographic indicators in autumn (2026-09-22 vintage covers 1960-2024). Sample use: filter country_code='ITA' to track the postponement of childbearing in Italy over time.

  • Eurostat

Prisoners by age class, annual (Europe)

Annual number of prisoners by age class - persons held in penal institutions - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_pris_age ('Prisoners by age and sex'), filtered to freq=A, sex=T ('Total'), unit=NR ('Number'); the age dimension keeps TOTAL ('Total'), JUVENILE ('Juvenile') and ADULT ('Adult'), all offence categories combined. Each row is one (year, country, age class). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national prison administrations; prisoner counts include convicted persons and persons held in pre-trial detention. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: prisoners (counts). Caveats: national definitions of penal institutions differ (some countries exclude certain detention types), so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends; the juvenile/adult age boundary is defined nationally and is not harmonized; counts scale with population - the companion prisoner-rates dataset gives per-100,000 rates for direct comparisons. Coverage: ~37 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, age_class). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the crime statistics in spring (2026-04-29 vintage covers 2008-2024). Sample use: filter age_class='JUVENILE' to track the juvenile prison population over time.

  • Eurostat

Suspects and offenders by age, annual (Europe)

Annual suspected, prosecuted and convicted persons by age class - all offence categories combined - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_just_age ('Suspects and offenders by age'), filtered to freq=A ('Annual'), unit=NR ('Number'), age in (TOTAL 'Total', JUVENILE 'Juvenile', ADULT 'Adult'); all three legal statuses are kept. Each row is one (year, country, legal status, age class): the number of persons, from police and justice records compiled by Eurostat under the UNODC International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS): PER_SUSP 'Suspected person', PER_PRSC 'Prosecuted person', PER_CNV 'Convicted person'. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: persons (counts). Caveats: prosecution and conviction counts lag the offence year through the justice pipeline, and coverage of the pipeline stages differs across countries; the juvenile/adult age boundary is defined nationally and is not harmonized. Coverage: ~37 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, justice_status, age_class). • Eurostat

Suspects and offenders by citizenship, annual (Europe)

Annual suspected, prosecuted and convicted persons by citizenship - all offence categories combined - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_just_ctz ('Suspects and offenders by citizenship'), filtered to freq=A ('Annual'), unit=NR ('Number'), citizen in (TOTAL 'Total', NAT 'Reporting country', FOR 'Foreign country'); all three legal statuses are kept. Each row is one (year, country, legal status, citizenship): the number of persons, from police and justice records compiled by Eurostat under the UNODC International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS): PER_SUSP 'Suspected person', PER_PRSC 'Prosecuted person', PER_CNV 'Convicted person'. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: persons (counts). Caveats: prosecution and conviction counts lag the offence year through the justice pipeline, and coverage of the pipeline stages differs across countries; citizenship is assigned by the reporting country and national definitions of nationals vs. non-nationals vary, so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends. Coverage: ~37 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. • Eurostat

    Total fertility rate (annual, Europe)

Annual total fertility rate - the mean number of children that would be born alive to a woman during her lifetime if she were to pass through her childbearing years conforming to the age-specific fertility rates of the given year - for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset demo_find ('Fertility indicators'), filtered to freq=A, indic_de=TOTFERRT ('Total fertility rate'). Each row is one (year, country). Method: Eurostat compiles the indicator from national vital-statistics registers; the TFR is a period measure, so it describes the fertility behaviour of a synthetic cohort, not any real generation of women. Units: children per woman. Caveats: the replacement level is about 2.1 children per woman in low-mortality populations - values below it signal long-run population decline absent net immigration; national breaks in vital-statistics series (e.g. territorial changes) are flagged in Eurostat metadata; early years are sparse for newer member and candidate countries. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries (the UK, Kosovo, Russia, Belarus) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Coverage: 45 geographic units after the geo rule, 1960 to the present (1,892 observations), annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the demographic indicators in autumn (2026-09-22 vintage covers 1960-2024).
