US IRS tax-refund pulse (weekly, filing season)
Weekly US tax-refund pulse intelligence from the IRS's public filing-season statistics releases: one row per filing-season week (2025 and 2026 seasons, 14 weeks each, weeks ending Fridays). Each row carries the cumulative refunds issued and dollars refunded verbatim from the IRS, plus the transformed weekly pulse: week-over-week refunds issued and dollars (first differences of the cumulative series, weeks verified exactly 7 days apart), the week's share of the season's total refund dollars (the 14-week IRS release window; 2025's window captured 83.6% of its full-season total), same-season-week year-over-year growth, the season's peak week, and context columns (returns received/processed, e-filing share, direct-deposit detail). Method: melt each release's two-column cumulative table (current + aligned prior-season week), difference to weekly increments, normalize to ordinal season weeks. Caveats: weeks ending before Feb 15 understate issuance (PATH Act holds EITC/ACTC refunds until Feb 15 — flagged); direct-deposit counts include prior-year returns so they can exceed total refunds (flagged); the 2026 season total is preliminary (post-season IRS updates revise it upward); weekly values are national, not state-level. | Colonne | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| season_year | integer | Filing season (calendar year the returns are filed in). 2025 and 2026 seasons in this snapshot. |
| season_week | integer | Ordinal week of the filing season (1..14), aligned across seasons so season_week 3 is the Feb-15 PATH-Act release week in both years; the YoY join key. |
| week_ending_date | string | Friday ending the IRS reporting week; the ISO date join key (a Shopify shop joins orders on ISO week). Weeks are exactly 7 days apart within each season. (unit: ISO date) |
| country_code | string | ISO alpha-3 country code (USA for every row; national grain). (unit: ISO 3166-1 alpha-3) |
| cum_refunds_issued | integer | Cumulative number of individual-income-tax refunds issued through the week-ending date, verbatim from the IRS (current-year returns only). (unit: count) |
| cum_amount_refunded_usd | float | Cumulative dollars refunded through the week-ending date, verbatim from the IRS. (unit: US dollars) |
| avg_refund_usd | float | Published average refund amount (reconciles to amount / count within $2). (unit: US dollars) |
| weekly_refunds_issued | integer | Refunds issued during this week only (first difference of the cumulative series; week 1 equals its cumulative). The pulse count. (unit: count) |
| weekly_amount_refunded_usd | float | Refund dollars issued during this week only — the core disposable-income pulse a retailer joins to orders by ISO week. (unit: US dollars) |
| weekly_refund_share_of_season | float | This week's dollars as a share of the season's total refund dollars (2026 sums to 1 against its preliminary total; 2025's 14-week release window sums to 0.836 against the full-season anchor, which includes post-May processing). (unit: 0-1) |
| cum_share_of_season | float | Cumulative dollars as a share of the season's total refund dollars (season progress). (unit: 0-1) |
| yoy_weekly_amount_pct | float | Year-over-year percent change of weekly refund dollars vs the same season_week last year (null for 2025 rows). (unit: percent) |
| yoy_weekly_count_pct | float | Year-over-year percent change of weekly refunds issued vs the same season_week last year (null for 2025 rows). (unit: percent) |
| yoy_cum_amount_pct | float | Year-over-year percent change of cumulative refund dollars vs the same season_week last year (null for 2025 rows). (unit: percent) |
| peak_week_flag | integer | 1 for the season's maximum weekly_amount_refunded_usd (week 3 both seasons: the Feb-15 PATH-Act EITC/ACTC release is the season's cash-injection pulse). (unit: binary) |
| path_act_hold_flag | integer | 1 for weeks ending before Feb 15: PATH Act Sec. 201 requires the IRS to hold EITC/ACTC refunds until Feb 15, so weeks 1-2 understate true issuance. (unit: binary) |
| cum_returns_received | integer | Cumulative individual returns received through the week (filing-pace context). (unit: count) |
| cum_returns_processed | integer | Cumulative individual returns processed through the week (filing-pace context). (unit: count) |
| efile_share_pct | float | E-filed returns as a percent of returns received (filing-pace context). (unit: percent) |
| cum_dd_refunds_issued | integer | Cumulative direct-deposit refunds (includes prior-year returns processed that year per the IRS footnote — NOT a strict subset of total refunds in later weeks). (unit: count) |
| cum_dd_amount_refunded_usd | float | Cumulative dollars refunded via direct deposit (same prior-year caveat as cum_dd_refunds_issued). (unit: US dollars) |
| dd_includes_prior_year_flag | integer | 1 when cumulative direct-deposit refunds exceed cumulative total refunds (the IRS footnote: direct deposit counts include prior-year returns). (unit: binary) |
| season_total_amount_refunded_usd | float | Season's total refund dollars: 2025 from the Dec-26-2025 anchor; 2026 from its latest weekly page (preliminary). The denominator behind the share columns. (unit: US dollars) |
| season_preliminary_flag | integer | 1 when the season total is preliminary (2026: post-season IRS updates revise it upward). (unit: binary) |
| as_of | string | Fetch date in UTC (snapshot vintage). (unit: ISO date) |
| source_url | string | The exact IRS newsroom release URL this season week's observation was read from (provenance). (unit: URL) |
| row_hash | string | Deterministic 16-hex row hash of season_year + season_week (idempotency). |
