US highway mobility intelligence from FHWA vehicle-miles (monthly)
Monthly US vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) on all roads and streets, 2000-01 to 2026-07 (319 months), from the Federal Highway Administration's keyless Traffic Volume Trends reports (SAVMT sheet: national raw and seasonally adjusted VMT in millions). Each row carries raw and seasonally adjusted VMT, year-over-year change, month-over-month change on the adjusted series, the trailing 12-month moving average and deviation from it, a 12-month rolling z-score, the trailing 12-month moving total, a record-high flag, and a documented 0-100 mobility_score (50 + 2.5*clip(dev_vs_ma12_pct,-10,10) + 5*clip(z12,-2.5,2.5)) with quintile tiers. Method: the latest monthly TVT workbook is fetched, the SAVMT sheet is parsed with fail-loud gates (monthly continuity, positive VMT, SA within 40% of raw, no duplicate months), and features are derived deterministically. Caveats: TVT estimates come from ~5,000 counting locations and are revised annually — recent months are preliminary; the series lags ~2 months; the April 2020 COVID trough is a genuine observation. FHWA data are U.S. federal public domain (17 U.S.C. 105); commercial use allowed with attribution.

| Colonne | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| year_month | string | Reference month (YYYY-MM). The join key; monthly continuity is fail-loud gated (no gaps). (unit: ISO year-month) |
| country_code | string | ISO alpha-3 country code (always USA — national panel). (unit: ISO 3166-1 alpha-3) |
| vmt_raw_m | float | Vehicle-miles-traveled on all US roads and streets, not seasonally adjusted, as published by FHWA. (unit: millions of vehicle miles) |
| vmt_sa_m | float | Seasonally adjusted VMT (FHWA VMT_D11 series). (unit: millions of vehicle miles) |
| yoy_pct | float | Year-over-year percent change of raw VMT vs the same month one year earlier (null for the first 12 months). (unit: percent) |
| mom_sa_pct | float | Month-over-month percent change of seasonally adjusted VMT (null for the first month). (unit: percent) |
| ma12_sa_m | float | Trailing 12-month moving average of seasonally adjusted VMT (null for the first 11 months). (unit: millions of vehicle miles) |
| dev_vs_ma12_pct | float | Deviation of seasonally adjusted VMT from its trailing 12-month moving average, in percent (null for the first 11 months). (unit: percent) |
| z12 | float | 12-month rolling z-score of seasonally adjusted VMT (population std; null for the first 11 months). (unit: standard deviations) |
| vmt_12m_total_m | float | Trailing 12-month moving total of raw VMT (null for the first 11 months). (unit: millions of vehicle miles) |
| is_record_high_sa | integer | 1 when the month's seasonally adjusted VMT is the highest observed up to and including that month. |
| mobility_score | float | Documented 0-100 composite: 50 + 2.5*clip(dev_vs_ma12_pct,-10,10) + 5*clip(z12,-2.5,2.5), clipped to [0,100]. 50 = on-trend; higher = above-trend mobility. Null for the first 11 months (no 12-month baseline). Descriptive, not a forecast. (unit: 0-100) |
| mobility_tier | string | Quintile label of mobility_score: very_low (<20), low (<40), normal (<60), high (<80), very_high (>=80). |
| source_url | string | The FHWA Traffic Volume Trends program page behind the series (provenance). |
| observed_date | string | Date the TVT workbook was read (ISO date). (unit: ISO date) |
| as_of | string | Build date of the panel (ISO date). (unit: ISO date) |
| row_hash | string | Deterministic 16-hex row identity: sha256('FHWA-VMT|<year_month>|<vmt_raw>|<vmt_sa>'). |
