Population on 1 January by sex (annual, Europe)

Annual resident population on 1 January split by sex, for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and the EU27/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset demo_pjan ('Population on 1 January by age and sex'), filtered to sex=M ('Males') / F ('Females'), age=TOTAL ('Total', all ages), freq=A and unit=NR ('Number'). Each row is one (year, country, sex). Method: Eurostat compiles the series from national population registers and censuses transmitted by the member states; the reference date is 1 January, so year N is the population at the start of year N. Units: number of persons (whole headcounts). Caveats: the male and female series sum to the headline total in the fixture country-years (M+F equals the sex=T total); female counts run above male counts in the large majority of published country-years; overseas departments are handled differently across countries (e.g. 'FX' metropolitan France and 'DE_TOT' Germany including the former GDR are separate published geos); the UK and other non-EU/EFTA/non-candidate countries are dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule; the EU27_2020 and EA20 aggregates are included as published. Coverage: ~45 geographic units after the geo rule, 1960 to the present, annual.
