US county broadband & internet-access intelligence (annual)
Annual US county broadband-adoption intelligence from the Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-year estimates, table B28002 (keyless official bulk .dat, U.S. public domain): broadband of any type, wired cable/fiber/DSL, dial-up-only, no-internet and no-subscription household shares for every US county and county-equivalent (including DC and Puerto Rico's municipios) over the 2021-2024 vintages, with per-vintage gaps versus the US national share, vintage-over-vintage change, a documented 0-100 digital-readiness score with per-vintage national county ranks and i1-i4 tiers, and most/least-connected plus improving/slipping flags. Estimates only (margins of error not carried). Source: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey.

| Column | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| year | integer | ACS 5-year vintage end year (e.g. 2024 = 2020-2024 5-year estimates). Table-based summary files start at the 2021 vintage. (unit: year) |
| country_code | string | ISO alpha-3 country code (USA for every row). (unit: ISO 3166-1 alpha-3) |
| state_fips | string | 2-digit Census FIPS state code (e.g. 06 = California, 11 = District of Columbia, 72 = Puerto Rico). |
| county_fips | string | 5-digit Census FIPS county code (state + county), the primary join key (e.g. 06001 = Alameda County, CA). |
| geo_code | string | Geography code, equal to county_fips. (unit: 5-digit FIPS) |
| geo_name | string | County/county-equivalent name from the Census Geos reference (e.g. 'Autauga County, Alabama'). |
| state_name | string | State/territory name. |
| total_households | integer | Total households, the B28002 universe (B28002_001). (unit: households) |
| broadband_any_share_pct | float | Households with broadband of any type (B28002_004) as a share of all households. (unit: percent) |
| wired_broadband_share_pct | float | Households with broadband such as cable, fiber optic or DSL (B28002_007) as a share of all households. (unit: percent) |
| dialup_only_share_pct | float | Households with dial-up and no other type of internet subscription (B28002_003) as a share of all households. (unit: percent) |
| no_internet_share_pct | float | Households with no internet access at all (B28002_013) as a share of all households. (unit: percent) |
| no_subscription_share_pct | float | Households without an internet subscription of any kind (total minus B28002_002) as a share of all households. (unit: percent) |
| broadband_gap_vs_us_pp | float | Per-vintage gap versus the US national broadband-any share: county share minus US share. Positive = county more connected than the nation. (unit: percentage points) |
| broadband_chg_pp | float | Vintage-over-vintage change in broadband-any share (percentage points), matched on GEO_ID. Null for the 2021 base vintage and for GEO_IDs new to a vintage (e.g. Connecticut's 2022 planning regions); never backfilled. (unit: percentage points) |
| us_broadband_any_share_pct | float | US national broadband-any household share (from the national 0100000US row), broadcast on every row. (unit: percent) |
| us_wired_broadband_share_pct | float | US national wired-broadband household share, broadcast on every row. (unit: percent) |
| digital_readiness_score | float | Documented 0-100 digital-readiness score: 100 * (r - 1) / (n - 1) with r the average 1-based rank of the county's broadband-any share (ascending) inside its vintage. (unit: 0-100) |
| readiness_rank | integer | Per-vintage national rank of broadband-any share across all counties (1 = most connected; competition ranking, ties share the rank). |
| readiness_tier | string | Readiness tier from the score: i4_most_connected (>= 75), i3_connected (>= 50), i2_lagging (>= 25), i1_least_connected (< 25). |
| most_connected_flag | integer | 1 when readiness_rank <= 100 (top-100 connected counties). |
| least_connected_flag | integer | 1 when readiness_rank is in the bottom 100 of its vintage. |
| improving_flag | integer | 1 when broadband_chg_pp >= +0.5 (connectivity improving vintage-over-vintage). |
| slipping_flag | integer | 1 when broadband_chg_pp <= -0.5 (connectivity slipping vintage-over-vintage). |
| row_hash | string | Deterministic 16-hex sha256 over CENSUSBB|<county_fips>|<year>; stable across re-ingests of identical data. |
