  • U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics

U.S. border crossing entries by port and mode, monthly

Monthly counts of people and conveyances entering the United States at land border ports of entry, compiled by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and published by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (Socrata dataset keg4-3bc2, https://data.bts.gov/resource/keg4-3bc2.json). Each row is one (month, port, measure) combination: measures are Buses, Bus Passengers, Pedestrians, Personal Vehicle Passengers, Personal Vehicles, Train Passengers, Trains and Trucks; value is the count. Units: counts of persons or conveyances. Caveats: land ports of entry only (airports and seaports are not covered); figures are revised as CBP finalizes monthly reports, so recent months can change. Coverage: US-Canada and US-Mexico borders, 1996-01 to the present, monthly granularity. Provenance: BTS keyless Socrata API, U.S. public domain - please cite the U.S. Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Primary key: (month, port_code, measure). Cadence: refreshed monthly; new months typically appear 4-8 weeks after month-end. Nullability: value is never null in the feed; latitude/longitude are null for a few ports. Sample use: filter border = 'US-Mexico Border' and measure = 'Pedestrians' to track monthly pedestrian crossings.

  • U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics

U.S. Transportation Services Index and components, monthly

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics' monthly Transportation Services Index (TSI) with its seasonally-adjusted underlying series (Socrata dataset bw6n-ddqk, https://data.bts.gov/resource/bw6n-ddqk.json). Each row is one month: the combined, freight and passenger indexes (tsi_total, tsi_freight, tsi_passenger, chained 2000 = 100) plus monthly changes, alongside the component series - air revenue passenger and ton miles, rail carloads/intermodal/passenger miles, transit ridership, pipeline movements, waterborne tonnage, truck tonnage index and vehicle miles traveled. Method: BTS aggregates for-hire transportation output; '_d11' columns are the seasonally-adjusted variants. Units: index points for tsi_* (base year 2000 = 100); component units are given per column (thousands, millions of short tons, billion cubic feet, etc.). Caveats: the latest 2-3 months are routinely revised as source data finalizes. Coverage: United States, 2000-01 to the present, monthly. Provenance: BTS keyless Socrata API, U.S. public domain - please cite the U.S. Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Primary key: obs_date (first of month). Cadence: refreshed monthly. Nullability: recent months may have nulls where a component series is not yet published. Sample use: plot tsi_freight against time as a coincident gauge of U.S. goods movement.

  • U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)

CFTC Commitments of Traders: financial futures

Weekly trader positioning in U.S. financial futures markets from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Traders in Financial Futures (TFF) report (https://www.cftc.gov/files/dea/history/fut_fin_txt_YYYY.zip). Each row is one contract market (currency, rate, equity-index futures, ...) on one report Tuesday: open interest plus long, short and spreading positions for dealer/intermediary, asset manager, leveraged-funds, other-reportable and non-reportable traders, with net (long - short) positions computed per category. Method: keyless download of the current-year and previous-year annual archives, concatenated and deduplicated. Units: number of contracts. Caveats: financial futures only (agriculture/energy/metals are separate COT reports); snapshots as of each Tuesday, released weekly; spread positions can double-count a trader across long/short/spread buckets; a market appears only when 20+ traders hold reportable positions. Coverage: 2025-01 to the latest published Tuesday, weekly granularity, ~115 contract markets. Provenance: CFTC TFF report, U.S. public domain. Primary key: (cftc_contract_market_code, report_date). Join keys: report_date, market_name. Cadence: refreshed weekly; a new snapshot appears only when the CFTC publishes a new weekly report or revises a past week. Sample use: leveraged-funds net positioning in currency futures as a sentiment/momentum signal.

  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

FEMA disaster declarations by designated area

Every FEMA disaster declaration summary from OpenFEMA (DisasterDeclarationsSummaries v2, https://www.fema.gov/api/open/v2), one row per declaration x designated area. Each row carries the declaration type (DR major disaster, EM emergency, FM fire management, FP fire suppression), incident type, declaration and incident dates, fiscal year declared, which assistance programs were authorized (Individuals and Households, Individual Assistance, Public Assistance, Hazard Mitigation), state, county FIPS and FEMA region. Method: keyless GET with OData paging ($top=1000, deterministic $orderby=disasterNumber, designatedArea); volatile API-internal fields (id, hash, lastRefresh) are excluded so snapshots only change when the data changes. Units: none (categorical + dates); program flags are booleans. Caveats: ongoing incidents have null end/closeout dates until FEMA closes them; FEMA can amend historical records; declaration_title is free-text incident names. Coverage: U.S. states, territories and tribal nations, 1953 to present, per designated area. Provenance: FEMA OpenFEMA API - citation required, see license. Primary key: (fema_declaration_string, designated_area). Join keys: state_code, declaration_year. Cadence: refreshed daily; a new snapshot appears only when the data changes. Sample use: count declarations by state_code and declaration_year for disaster frequency trends; filter incident_type for hazard-specific series.

  • Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA)

FHFA House Price Index by state, quarterly

Quarterly purchase-only House Price Index by U.S. state from the Federal Housing Finance Agency master file (https://www.fhfa.gov/hpi/download/monthly/hpi_master.csv). The flagship FHFA HPI: seasonally adjusted purchase-only data from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, weighted repeat-sales method, indexed to 1991Q1=100; both the seasonally adjusted and not-seasonally-adjusted series are included. Method: keyless download of the master CSV, filtered to level=State, hpi_flavor=purchase-only, hpi_type=traditional, frequency=quarterly. Units: index points (1991Q1=100). Caveats: the latest quarter is preliminary and revised in later releases; the index measures price change, not price levels, so cross-state level comparisons are meaningless — compare growth rates; 'FHFA House Price Index®' is a registered trademark (branding constraint only). Coverage: 50 states + DC, 1991Q1 to the latest published quarter, quarterly granularity. Provenance: FHFA HPI master file, U.S. public domain - please cite the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Primary key: (state_code, year, quarter). Join keys: state_code, year. Cadence: refreshed quarterly; a new snapshot appears only when FHFA publishes or revises data. Sample use: quarter-over-quarter growth by state for housing market momentum.
