  • Eurostat

Homicide by victim relationship, annual (Europe)

Annual number of intentional homicide victims by victim-offender relationship - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_hom_vrel ('Intentional homicide victims by victim-offender relationship and sex'), filtered to freq=A, unit=NR ('Number'). Each row is one (year, country, relationship category, sex): the three published relationship categories are intimate partner or family member (IPTN_FAM), family member (FAM) and intimate partner (IPTN), each broken down by sex (T='Total', M='Male', F='Female'). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national police and criminal-justice data collections. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: number of victims (counts). Caveats: intimate-partner homicide is the femicide-relevant measure but national definitions and under-recording differ, so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends; published sex totals occasionally differ from male+female sums upstream (e.g. AL 2015 T=19 vs M+F=21) - values are kept verbatim and never recomputed. Coverage: ~28 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, relationship_code, sex). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the crime statistics in spring (2026-04-29 vintage covers 2008-2024). Sample use: filter relationship_code='IPTN' and sex='F' to track female intimate-partner homicide victims over time.

  • Eurostat

Homicide victim rates by relationship, annual (Europe)

Annual rates of intentional homicide victims per 100,000 inhabitants by victim-offender relationship - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_hom_vrel ('Intentional homicide victims by victim-offender relationship and sex'), filtered to freq=A, unit=P_HTHAB ('Per hundred thousand inhabitants'). Each row is one (year, country, relationship category, sex): the three published relationship categories are intimate partner or family member (IPTN_FAM), family member (FAM) and intimate partner (IPTN), each broken down by sex (T='Total', M='Male', F='Female'). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national police and criminal-justice data collections; rates use the resident population as the denominator. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: victims per 100,000 inhabitants. • Eurostat

Prisoners by offence category, annual (Europe)

Annual number of prisoners by offence category - persons held in penal institutions - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_pris_off ('Prisoners by offence category and sex'), filtered to freq=A, sex=T ('Total'), unit=NR ('Number'). Each row is one (year, country, offence category): the four published categories are intentional homicide (ICCS0101), rape (ICCS03011), sexual assault (ICCS03012) and bribery (ICCS07031). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national prison administrations; prisoner counts include convicted persons and persons held in pre-trial detention. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: number of prisoners (counts). Caveats: national definitions of penal institutions differ (some countries exclude certain detention types), so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends; the four offence categories do not sum to the total prison population - most prisoners are held for other offences (see the companion prisoners-annual dataset). Coverage: 35 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, offence_code). Sample use: filter offence_code='ICCS03011' to compare rape prisoner counts across countries.

  • Eurostat

Violent crime by legal status and sex, annual (Europe)

Annual intentional-homicide, rape and sexual-assault rates by legal status and sex - victims and suspected, prosecuted and convicted persons per 100,000 inhabitants - for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and the EU aggregate. Eurostat dataset crim_hom_soff ('Intentional homicide and sexual offences by legal status and sex'), filtered to freq=A, unit=P_HTHAB ('Per hundred thousand inhabitants'), sex in (T 'Total', M 'Males', F 'Females'). Each row is one (year, country, offence, legal status, sex). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from police and justice records transmitted by the national statistical institutes under the UNODC International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS): ICCS0101 'Intentional homicide', ICCS03011 'Rape', ICCS03012 'Sexual assault'; legal statuses PER_VICT 'Victim', PER_SUSP 'Suspected person', PER_PRSC 'Prosecuted person', PER_CNV 'Convicted person'. For victims the sex split describes the victims; for the other statuses it describes the suspected, prosecuted or convicted persons. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: persons per 100,000 inhabitants. Caveats: sexual offences are under-recorded everywhere and under-recording differs across countries; prosecution and conviction counts lag the offence year through the justice pipeline; the EU_V aggregate changes composition with EU enlargements. Coverage: ~38 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, offence_code, legal_status, sex). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the crime statistics in spring (2026-04-29 vintage covers 2008-2024). Sample use: filter offence_code='ICCS0101' and legal_status='PER_VICT' to track homicide victimization rates by sex.

  • World Bank

    Intentional homicides (per 100,000 people)

Estimated rate of intentional homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). An intentional homicide is defined as an unlawful death inflicted upon a person with the intent to cause death or serious injury. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from the UNODC Research Data Portal (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, intentional homicide statistics). It complements the connector-free Eurostat crime datasets: the UNODC/WHO-sourced global series extends homicide measurement to the USA, Canada, Japan, China and India. Reporting lags differ by country (the latest observed year is 2023 for most, 2022 for India, 2021 for the UK, 2020 for China) — genuine upstream gaps, kept verbatim. The 8-country panel is covered 2000-2023; values are null where national statistics are unavailable and are never interpolated. Units: homicides per 100,000 people.
