Violent crime by legal status and sex, annual (Europe)
Annual intentional-homicide, rape and sexual-assault rates by legal status and sex - victims and suspected, prosecuted and convicted persons per 100,000 inhabitants - for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and the EU aggregate. Eurostat dataset crim_hom_soff ('Intentional homicide and sexual offences by legal status and sex'), filtered to freq=A, unit=P_HTHAB ('Per hundred thousand inhabitants'), sex in (T 'Total', M 'Males', F 'Females'). Each row is one (year, country, offence, legal status, sex). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from police and justice records transmitted by the national statistical institutes under the UNODC International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS): ICCS0101 'Intentional homicide', ICCS03011 'Rape', ICCS03012 'Sexual assault'; legal statuses PER_VICT 'Victim', PER_SUSP 'Suspected person', PER_PRSC 'Prosecuted person', PER_CNV 'Convicted person'. For victims the sex split describes the victims; for the other statuses it describes the suspected, prosecuted or convicted persons. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: persons per 100,000 inhabitants. Caveats: sexual offences are under-recorded everywhere and under-recording differs across countries; prosecution and conviction counts lag the offence year through the justice pipeline; the EU_V aggregate changes composition with EU enlargements. Coverage: ~38 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, offence_code, legal_status, sex). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the crime statistics in spring (2026-04-29 vintage covers 2008-2024). Sample use: filter offence_code='ICCS0101' and legal_status='PER_VICT' to track homicide victimization rates by sex.
