Final consumption expenditure (% of GDP)

Final consumption expenditure - expenditure on goods and services by resident institutional units (households, general government, the central bank and non-profit institutions serving households) for the direct satisfaction of human needs or wants - expressed as a share of GDP, for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). Published by the World Bank in the World Development Indicators from country official statistics, national statistical organizations and/or central banks, OECD national accounts data files and World Bank staff estimates. The demand side of the national accounts: consumption plus investment plus net exports equals GDP, so this series anchors the connector's trade and fiscal balance datasets. Consumption shares differ sharply across development models: the UK (82.71% in 2023) and the USA (81.26%) consume most of their output, while China saves and invests (56.76% in 2023); India's share fell from 71.43% in 2021 to 67.11% in 2023. Caveats: values are null where national statistics are unavailable and are never interpolated. Units: % of GDP.
