Greenhouse gas emissions, total (annual, Europe)

Annual total greenhouse gas emissions in million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and the EU aggregate. Eurostat dataset env_air_gge ('Greenhouse gas emissions by source sector'), filtered to the airpol GHG slice ('Greenhouse gases: CO2, N2O, CH4, HFC, PFC, SF6 and NF3 in CO2 equivalent'), source sector TOTX4_MEMO ('Total excluding LULUCF and memo items' - the headline national total used in EU climate reporting), unit MIO_T ('Million tonnes'). Each row is one (year, country). Method: national greenhouse gas inventories compiled by the member states under the EU Monitoring Mechanism Regulation and transmitted to the EEA; non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets - the UK does not report to this table). Units: million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Caveats: totals are the sum of sector estimates and carry inventory-methodology uncertainty; annual revisions are routine (Eurostat updated this table 2026-06-02); LULUCF is excluded from this total (see the by-sector dataset, where LULUCF appears as a separate - often negative - sector). Coverage: ~32 geographic units after the geo rule, 1990 to the present, annual.
