Tax revenue refers to compulsory transfers to the central government for public purposes, excluding most social security contributions, fines and penalties, and treating refunds as negative revenue — the headline measure of a state's fiscal capacity. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from International Monetary Fund data (Government Finance Statistics Yearbook and data files). The 8-country panel is covered 2000-2024, except that Japan has no observations in this series (a genuine upstream gap, not a connector fault); India is sparse before 2008. Values are null where national statistics are unavailable and are never interpolated. Units: percent of GDP.
