The volume of goods transported by railway, measured in metric tons times kilometers traveled, covering the full national rail network. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from OECD and International Transport Forum data. Like the rail-lines series it lags by several years (coverage to 2021 in the current vintage); read it together with the rail-lines dataset as utilization versus network size. The existing Eurostat rail-freight dataset covers Europe in detail; this panel extends coverage to the USA, Canada, Japan, China and India. Values are null where national statistics are unavailable and are never interpolated. Units: million ton-km.
