Population ages 65 and above (% of total population)
Total population ages 65 and above as a percentage of the total population, for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). Population counts all residents regardless of legal status or citizenship. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from the United Nations Population Division's World Population Prospects (2024 Revision, or derived from male and female population). Pairs with the population-ages-0-14 dataset: the two shares (plus the 15-64 residual) decompose the total population by age structure; together with the life-expectancy dataset they describe the demographic transition (e.g. Japan had the highest 65+ share of the panel in 2023 at about 29.6%, India the lowest at about 6.9%). The 8-country panel is covered 2000-2025 with no upstream gaps observed; values are null where national statistics are unavailable and are never interpolated. Units: % of total population.
