Patent applications filed by nonresidents with a national patent office or through the Patent Cooperation Treaty procedure, for exclusive rights for an invention — a product or process that provides a new way of doing something or offers a new technical solution to a problem, generally protected for 20 years. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from the WIPO Patent Report (Statistics on Worldwide Patent Activity); WIPO assumes no responsibility for the transformation of these data. Counts are by filing office, so a country's figure reflects foreign applications filed at its own office, not its inventors' filings abroad. The 8-country panel is covered 2000-2021; WIPO data lag about two years behind the present, and values are null where national statistics are unavailable. Units: patent applications (count).
