EU asylum applications, monthly (Eurostat)
Monthly asylum-applications panel from Eurostat's official keyless dissemination API: asylum applications lodged per destination country and month, 2008 onward, split into total, first-time and subsequent applicants, with the first-time share of applications, month-on-month and year-on-year changes, a trailing-12-month total and a within-month application rank. Eurostat observation flags (estimated/provisional/break) kept verbatim; the first-time/subsequent split is honestly null where unpublished upstream. Who joins this: migration and humanitarian models join application flows on (geo, month) to reception capacity and displacement-pressure baselines; policy analysts track first-time applications as the cleanest flow gauge of new arrivals; macro and labour-market models use asylum inflows as a leading demographic signal. Eurostat dataset migr_asyappctzm ('Asylum applicants by type, citizenship, age and sex - monthly data'). Complements the catalog's UNHCR annual stock panels with fresh monthly flow data.

| Column | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| month | string | Observation month as YYYY-MM (2008-01 -> latest published); panel join key with geo. (unit: month) |
| month_start | date | First day of the observation month. (unit: date) |
| geo | string | Eurostat country/aggregate code (e.g. DE, FR, EU27_2020). The United Kingdom and Kosovo are excluded per the catalog's Eurostat geo rule. (unit: string) |
| geo_label | string | English label for geo as published by Eurostat. (unit: string) |
| applicants_total | float | Asylum applications lodged by all applicants (first-time + subsequent, as independently reported) in the destination country and month. Eurostat migr_asyappctzm, citizen=TOTAL, applicant=TOTAL. (unit: persons) |
| applicants_total_flag | string | Eurostat observation flag for applicants_total as published ('e' estimated, 'p' provisional, 'b' break in series, ...); empty when unflagged. (unit: string) |
| applicants_first_time | float | First-time asylum applicants (applicant=FRST) — the cleanest flow gauge of new arrivals. Honestly null where unpublished upstream — never imputed. (unit: persons) |
| applicants_first_time_flag | string | Eurostat observation flag for applicants_first_time as published; empty when unflagged. (unit: string) |
| applicants_subsequent | float | Subsequent (repeat) asylum applicants (applicant=SSEQ). Honestly null where unpublished upstream — never imputed. (unit: persons) |
| applicants_subsequent_flag | string | Eurostat observation flag for applicants_subsequent as published; empty when unflagged. (unit: string) |
| first_time_share_pct | string | First-time share of applications: 100 * applicants_first_time / applicants_total. Null unless both cells are published. Note total ~= first-time + subsequent holds only approximately upstream, so the share is descriptive, not an identity. (unit: percent) |
| mom_total_pct | float | Month-on-month percent change of applicants_total (exact prior month); null for a geo's first published month or when the prior month is missing (never bridges gaps). (unit: percent) |
| yoy_total_pct | float | Year-on-year percent change of applicants_total (exact same month of the prior year); null when that month is missing (never bridges gaps). (unit: percent) |
| rolling12_total | float | Trailing-12-month sum of applicants_total for the geo (the 12 months ending in the observation month). Null unless all 12 months are published — never summed across a hole. (unit: persons) |
| applicants_total_rank | integer | Within-month rank of applicants_total across kept geos (1 = most applications; ties share a rank). (unit: rank) |
| row_hash | string | Deterministic 16-hex sha256 of month + geo + the raw applicant values and flags (idempotency key). (unit: string) |
