    Individuals with basic or above basic digital skills (annual)

    Annual share of individuals aged 16 to 74 with at least basic overall digital skills, for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset isoc_sk_dskl_i21 ("Individuals' level of digital skills (from 2021 onwards)"), filtered to the headline indicator I_DSK2_BAB ('Individuals with basic or above basic overall digital skills'), unit PC_IND (percent of individuals), total population 16-74. Each row is one (year, country). Method: Eurostat's ICT survey scores five competence areas (information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, digital content creation, safety, problem solving); a respondent counts as 'basic or above' when all five areas reach at least basic level. This is the EU Digital Decade headline target series. Units: percent of individuals. Caveats: the ICT survey runs the digital-skills module every two years, so observations are biennial (2021, 2023, 2025, ...) and the connector is declared yearly with no-op refreshes in off years; the 2021-onwards methodology is not comparable with the pre-2021 digital-skills series; Kosovo (XK) is dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule; the EU, EU27_2020 and EA aggregates are included as published. Coverage: ~38 geographic units after the geo rule, 2021 to the present. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the ICT indicators in spring.     Annual share of individuals aged 16 to 74 who used the internet in the last 3 months, for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset isoc_ci_ifp_iu ('Individuals - internet use'), filtered to the headline indicator I_IU3 ('Last internet use: in last 3 months'), unit PC_IND (percent of individuals), total population 16-74. Each row is one (year, country). Method: Eurostat's annual survey on ICT usage in households and by individuals, self-reported by national statistical offices; non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: percent of individuals. Caveats: the ICT survey questionnaire was substantially revised in 2021, so pre-2021 values are only broadly comparable; the UK and Kosovo (XK) are dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule; the EU, EU27_2020, EU28, EA and historical aggregates are included as published. Coverage: ~42 geographic units after the geo rule, 2002 to the present, annual.     Global R&D expenditure signals (innovation intensity)

    Annual global R&D-intensity signals from the World Bank World Development Indicators (GB.XPD.RSDV.GD.ZS, ~193 economies, 1996 -> 2024): 5-year changes, OLS trend slopes, 3-sigma anomaly flags, 5-year extrapolation forecasts, 10-year intensity z-scores, per-year intensity ranks, and innovation-leader (>=3%), laggard (<0.5%), and catch-up gauges. The innovation-input lens — R&D spending as % of GDP is the standard proxy for an economy's investment in future productivity. Country codes validated via the shared normalization layer. Raw indicator: UNESCO Institute for Statistics via the World Bank (keyless API).

    High-technology exports are products with high R&D intensity, such as in aerospace, computers, pharmaceuticals, scientific instruments, and electrical machinery, expressed in current U.S. dollars. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from UN Comtrade data. Because values are in current US dollars, cross-year comparisons mix price and volume effects. The 8-country panel is covered 2007-2024 (India from 2009); values are null where national statistics are unavailable.

    Research and development expenditure is current and capital expenditure (both public and private) on creative work undertaken systematically to increase the stock of knowledge and devise new applications of available knowledge. It covers basic research, applied research, and experimental development. The indicator expresses gross domestic expenditure on R&D as a share of GDP in percent. It is sourced from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and published by the World Bank in the World Development Indicators. The 8-country panel is covered 2000-2023 (Canada through 2024, India through 2020); values are null where national statistics are unavailable.
