    Prisoner rates, annual (Europe)

Annual prisoner rates - prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_pris_age ('Prisoners by age and sex'), filtered to freq=A, sex=T ('Total'), age=TOTAL ('Total'), unit=P_HTHAB ('Per hundred thousand inhabitants'). Each row is one (year, country): the total prison population per 100,000 residents, all ages and both sexes. Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national prison administrations; prisoner counts include convicted persons and persons held in pre-trial detention; rates use the resident population as the denominator. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants. Caveats: national definitions of penal institutions differ (some countries exclude certain detention types), so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends. Coverage: ~37 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the crime statistics in spring (2026-04-29 vintage covers 2008-2024). Sample use: filter country_code='FRA' to compare France's incarceration rate over time.

    Prisoners, annual (Europe)

Annual number of prisoners - persons held in penal institutions - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_pris_age ('Prisoners by age and sex'), filtered to freq=A, sex=T ('Total'), age=TOTAL ('Total'), unit=NR ('Number'). Each row is one (year, country): the total prison population, all ages and both sexes. Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national prison administrations; prisoner counts include convicted persons and persons held in pre-trial detention. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: number of prisoners (counts). Caveats: national definitions of penal institutions differ (some countries exclude certain detention types), so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends; counts scale with population - the companion prisoner-rates dataset gives per-100,000 rates for direct comparisons. Coverage: ~37 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the crime statistics in spring (2026-04-29 vintage covers 2008-2024). Sample use: filter country_code='DEU' to track Germany's prison population over time.

  • Eurostat

Prisoners by age class, annual (Europe)

Annual number of prisoners by age class - persons held in penal institutions - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_pris_age ('Prisoners by age and sex'), filtered to freq=A, sex=T ('Total'), unit=NR ('Number'); the age dimension keeps TOTAL ('Total'), JUVENILE ('Juvenile') and ADULT ('Adult'), all offence categories combined. Each row is one (year, country, age class). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national prison administrations; prisoner counts include convicted persons and persons held in pre-trial detention. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: prisoners (counts). Caveats: national definitions of penal institutions differ (some countries exclude certain detention types), so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends; the juvenile/adult age boundary is defined nationally and is not harmonized; counts scale with population - the companion prisoner-rates dataset gives per-100,000 rates for direct comparisons. Coverage: ~37 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, age_class). Sample use: filter age_class='JUVENILE' to track the juvenile prison population over time.

  • Eurostat

Prisoners by offence category, annual (Europe)

Annual number of prisoners by offence category - persons held in penal institutions - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_pris_off ('Prisoners by offence category and sex'), filtered to freq=A, sex=T ('Total'), unit=NR ('Number'). Each row is one (year, country, offence category): the four published categories are intentional homicide (ICCS0101), rape (ICCS03011), sexual assault (ICCS03012) and bribery (ICCS07031). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national prison administrations; prisoner counts include convicted persons and persons held in pre-trial detention. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: number of prisoners (counts). Caveats: national definitions of penal institutions differ (some countries exclude certain detention types), so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends; the four offence categories do not sum to the total prison population - most prisoners are held for other offences (see the companion prisoners-annual dataset). Coverage: 35 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, offence_code). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the crime statistics in spring (2026-04-29 vintage covers 2008-2024). Sample use: filter offence_code='ICCS03011' to compare rape prisoner counts across countries.

  • Eurostat

    Prisoners by sex, annual (Europe)

Annual number of prisoners by sex - persons held in penal institutions - for EU member states, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. Eurostat dataset crim_pris_age ('Prisoners by age and sex'), filtered to freq=A, age=TOTAL ('Total'), unit=NR ('Number'); the sex dimension keeps T ('Total'), M ('Males') and F ('Females'), all offence categories combined. Each row is one (year, country, sex). Method: Eurostat compiles the statistics from national prison administrations; prisoner counts include convicted persons and persons held in pre-trial detention. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate series (the UK sub-national series UKC-L/UKM/UKN, Kosovo) are dropped (same licensing rule as the other Eurostat datasets). Units: prisoners (counts). Caveats: national definitions of penal institutions differ (some countries exclude certain detention types), so cross-country levels are less comparable than within-country trends; sex-T totals do not always equal the M+F sum where reporting is incomplete; counts scale with population - the companion prisoner-rates dataset gives per-100,000 rates for direct comparisons. Coverage: ~37 geographic units after the geo rule, 2008 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code, sex). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the crime statistics in spring (2026-04-29 vintage covers 2008-2024). Sample use: filter sex='F' to track the female prison population over time.
