Energy intensity, annual (kgoe per 1,000 EUR PPS)

Annual energy intensity - gross inland energy consumption per unit of GDP - for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and the EU27_2020 aggregate. Eurostat dataset nrg_ind_ei ('Energy intensity'), filtered to freq=A, nrg_bal=EI_GDP_PPS ('Energy intensity of GDP in purchasing power standards') and unit=KGOE_TEUR_PPS ('Kilograms of oil equivalent per thousand euro in purchasing power standards'). Each row is one (year, country): kilograms of oil equivalent consumed per 1,000 EUR of GDP (PPS), so lower values mean a more energy-efficient economy. Method: Eurostat divides gross inland consumption (all energy products) by GDP in purchasing power standards from the national accounts; the PPS denominator makes cross-country comparisons meaningful. Non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries (the UK and Kosovo/XK) are dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule. Units: kilograms of oil equivalent per thousand euro in purchasing power standards (kgoe/1,000 EUR PPS). Caveats: intensity conflates economic structure with efficiency - deindustrialised or service-heavy economies score low regardless of policy; Norway's series is volatile year to year (hydro-driven electricity mix and offshore activity); recent years are provisional and revised. Coverage: 38 geographic units, 36 after the geo rule, 1995 to the present, annual. Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat updates the energy balances each spring.
