Stocks traded, total value (% of GDP)
Total value of shares traded (number of shares traded, domestic and foreign, times their matching prices; single-counted, only one side of the transaction), expressed as a percentage of GDP, for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) database; figures are end-of-year values. It pairs with the connector's market-cap-listed-companies-gdp dataset: dividing this series by market capitalization gives the implied equity turnover ratio (trading velocity), which separates market liquidity from market size - China turns over fastest (traded value exceeded 300% of GDP in 2025) while Germany's market is deep but quiet (~29% of GDP in 2025). Caveats: France's WFE series is frozen at 2015 and the UK series ends in 2023 (genuine provider gaps); values are null where national statistics are unavailable and are never interpolated. Units: % of GDP.
