Road accident fatalities, annual (persons killed)

Annual number of persons killed in road accidents, by reporting country, for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidates and the EU aggregate. Eurostat dataset tran_sf_roadus ('Persons killed in road accidents by age, sex and category of persons involved'), filtered to freq=A, sex=T ('Total'), age=TOTAL ('Total'), unit=NR ('Number') and pers_cat=TOTAL ('Total' category of persons involved), from the CARE database (Community database on Accidents on the Roads in Europe, managed by DG MOVE). Each row is one (year, country): persons killed outright or dying within 30 days of the accident, all road users and all ages. Method: Eurostat compiles CARE microdata transmitted by the member states under Council Decision 93/704/EC; national datasets are integrated in their original structure with transformation rules for compatibility; non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries (notably the UK) are dropped by the connector's commercial-use geo rule. Units: number of persons killed. Caveats: injury definitions are not harmonised, so only fatalities are published; the 2020 dip reflects COVID-19 mobility restrictions, not a permanent change; EU27_2020 is included as published; recent years are provisional and revised. Coverage: ~34 geographic units after the geo rule, 1999 to the present, annual. Provenance: Eurostat keyless JSON-stat API, free reuse with attribution (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU) - please cite Eurostat. Primary key: (year, country_code). Join keys: country_code (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3), year. Cadence: refreshed yearly; Eurostat publishes the series each spring. Sample use: filter country_code='SWE' and 'ROU' to compare the EU's lowest and highest fatality counts over time.
