Defense Spending Signals (derived)
Annual military-expenditure burden signals from the World Bank World Development Indicators (SIPRI via WDI, 1960 ->, % of GDP, keyless): per-economy 5-year changes, 10-year OLS trend slopes, 3-sigma anomaly flags, linear-extrapolation forecasts, 10-year z-scores, per-year cross-country ranks, and high/low spender and rearmament-surge flags. The defense-burden lens — rearmament waves and drawdowns normalized across economies — not covered elsewhere in the catalog. Country labels normalized to ISO alpha-3. Raw data: World Bank WDI indicator MS.MIL.XPND.GD.ZS.

Military expenditure in current U.S. dollars for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from the SIPRI Military Expenditure Database (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute): current military spending converted to U.S. dollars at the market exchange rate for the given year. The SIPRI definition includes military and civil personnel, operations and maintenance, procurement, military research and development, and military aid (in donor countries' military expenditure). Nominal (current prices): no adjustment for price changes over time, so cross-year comparisons conflate real spending changes with inflation. Pairs with the military-expenditure share of GDP dataset. Values are null where national statistics are unavailable and are never interpolated. Units: current US$.
