Primary energy consumption (annual, MTOE)

Annual primary energy consumption in million tonnes of oil equivalent, for EU member states, EFTA countries, EU candidate countries and EU/euro-area aggregates. Eurostat dataset nrg_ind_eff ('Energy efficiency'), filtered to freq=A, nrg_bal=PEC_EED ('Primary energy consumption - Energy Efficiency Directive') and unit=MTOE ('Million tonnes of oil equivalent'). Each row is one (year, country): gross inland energy consumption excluding non-energy uses - the supply-side twin of the connector's 'final-energy-consumption-annual' dataset (the FEC_EED slice of the same table): primary always exceeds final because it includes transformation and distribution losses, so the primary-final gap measures the efficiency of the energy system itself. Headline spot values 2024: EU27_2020 1,193.7, DEU 231.3, FRA 202.6 MTOE. Method: Eurostat compiles annual energy balances transmitted by the member states; non-EU/EFTA/candidate countries are dropped (same licensing rule). Units: million tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE). Caveats: values mix real efficiency gains with structural change and weather effects; the EU27_2020 aggregate dominates the series; recent years are provisional and revised.
