Current health expenditure covers total spending on health goods and services (preventive and curative care, medical goods, governance and health-system administration) by public and private payers; capital expenditure on health is excluded. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database. It pairs with the connector's life-expectancy dataset and the under-5-mortality dataset added alongside it: health-spending input against longevity and child-mortality outcomes. The 8-country panel is covered 2000-2024 in the live vintage (Canada, Germany, France and the UK publish through 2024; the others through 2023) - genuine upstream reporting lags, kept verbatim, never interpolated. Units: % of GDP.
Life expectancy at birth indicates the number of years a newborn infant would live if prevailing patterns of mortality at the time of its birth were to stay the same throughout its life.
Population-weighted exposure to ambient PM2.5 pollution - the average level of exposure of a nation's population to concentrations of suspended particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in aerodynamic diameter, which are capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory tract and causing severe health damage - for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). Exposure is calculated by weighting mean annual concentrations of PM2.5 by population in both urban and rural areas. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 (GBD 2023) air-pollution exposure estimates (IHME). India runs an order of magnitude above the low-exposure panel members throughout (Canada, Japan, USA). The 8-country panel is covered 2000-2023 in the live vintage (2024-2025 are null upstream - a genuine GBD reporting lag, never interpolated). Units: micrograms per cubic meter.
Mortality rate of children under age 5 per 1,000 live births - the probability that a newborn dies before reaching age five, for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from estimates developed by the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UNICEF, WHO, World Bank, UN DESA Population Division); it is a headline indicator for SDG target 3.2. It pairs with the connector's health-expenditure dataset added alongside it: health-spending input against child-mortality outcomes - note the USA's rate runs several times higher than Japan's despite outspending it. The 8-country panel is covered 2000-2024 in the live vintage with no upstream gaps observed - values are null where estimates are unavailable and are never interpolated.
