Forest area as a share of total land area, for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). Forest is natural or planted stands of trees at least 5 metres tall in situ, whether productive or not; tree stands in agricultural systems (fruit plantations, agroforestry) and trees in urban parks and gardens are excluded. The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from FAOSTAT, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (vintage last updated 2026-07-13) - the connector's first FAO-sourced dataset. Japan is the most forested panel member (68.40% in 2023) and the UK the least (13.29%); China's series climbs steadily (23.63% in 2021 to 24.03% in 2023, reflecting its large-scale afforestation programmes) while most others are flat year to year, which is a genuine upstream phenomenon (FAO assessments repeat the last value between reporting years) and is kept verbatim, never interpolated. Values are null where national statistics are unavailable. Units: % of land area.
