FEMA disaster declarations (agent-curated)
Annual state x year intelligence on US federal major-disaster (DR) declarations, 1953 to present, from FEMA's keyless OpenFEMA API v2. Each row is one of 59 states/territories/freely-associated states (plus a US national aggregate row) for one calendar year: distinct DR declaration count (deduped from the one-row-per-designated-area feed by femaDeclarationString), designated-area totals and areas-per-disaster, IA/PA/HM program counts and IA share, hazard-family counts under the connector's closed 9-family taxonomy (tropical-cyclone, severe-storm, flood, winter-storm, wildfire, earthquake, landslide, coastal-storm, other — note 'other' carries the Biological (COVID-19) pandemic declarations) with the dominant family and its share, the year's most common verbatim incident type, year-matched Census population estimates (Vintage 2019 for 2010-2019, Vintage 2025 for 2020-2025; 2026 reuses 2025; null before 2010 and for non-Census-covered areas), disasters per 100,000 people, year-over-year change and a trailing-3-year mean, and two documented 0-100 burden scores (burden_score: mean of within-year min-max-normalized disaster count, designated areas, IA disasters; burden_percap_score: within-year normalized disasters per 100k). Units: counts, percent, per-100k, scores. Caveats: DR declarations only (no emergency/FM); counts are designations, not damage dollars; incidentType is the declaration-level FEMA label. Primary key: (state_code, year). Cadence: yearly; as_of is the latest declaration date in the data, so identical input produces an identical content hash. FEMA records under use-restricted terms (statistical research/reporting only) — commercial_use = unclear with the mandated non-endorsement disclaimer. Sample use: rank burden_percap_score within a year for the states hit hardest relative to population, or track flood_count trends by state.
