Statistics Canada — police-reported crime
Annual Crime Severity Index (CSI) from Statistics Canada's Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (table 35-10-0026-01): the index measures changes in the seriousness of crime by weighting each offence by its seriousness — a higher index means more (or more serious) crime. For Canada and the 13 provinces and territories, by measure: total crime severity index, violent crime severity index, non-violent crime severity index. The index is set so that 2006 = 100 for Canada. Coverage 1998 to the present (Nunavut begins 1999), annual. Caveats: police-reported incidents only — victimization surveys find higher rates; indices for the territories and PEI are noisy because small populations amplify single serious incidents (Nunavut's violent index exceeded 500 in recent years); genuine upstream gaps are kept missing, never zero-filled; the latest year is occasionally revised the following July.
