U.S. Census Bureau
Quarterly US state retail-demand intelligence from the keyless U.S. Census Bureau QTAX Table 3 workbooks: one row per quarter per state (50 states + DC + a U.S. total row), 2019Q1 to 2026Q2. Each row carries published general sales and gross receipts tax collections (T09, thousands of dollars) and total tax collections, the T09 share of the tax mix, gap-aware quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year changes (YoY is the primary momentum lens — retail is seasonal), a trailing 8-quarter z-score, and a documented 0-100 retail-demand score (60% winsorized YoY momentum + 40% z-score momentum, min-maxed within each quarter across the states), with deterministic per-quarter demand ranks, rank-quartile tiers, 8-quarter-record-high and sharp-drop (YoY <= -10%) flags, and the Census revision flag. Method: thirty quarterly workbooks in two Census layouts parsed to one tidy panel; state names entity-resolved to USPS codes + FIPS; the four states with structurally-null T09 (AK, DE, MT, NH) keep explicit nulls — Oregon, though it has no retail sales tax, carries numeric T09 because its Corporate Activity Tax (a gross-receipts tax, effective 2020) is classified by Census under T09; momentum requires exact quarter spacing. Caveats: collections reflect taxable sales, not total retail sales (coverage varies by state tax base); the latest quarter can be revised (flag 'r'); the score is a relative demand gauge, not a forecast. U.S. federal public domain (commercial reuse allowed with attribution to the U.S. Census Bureau).
