Electricity production from coal sources (% of total)
Share of electricity generated from coal in total electricity generated by all types of plants, for the 8-country panel (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, India). Coal here means all coal and brown coal - primary coal (hard coal, lignite) plus derived fuels (patent fuel, coke oven coke, gas coke, coke oven gas, blast furnace gas). The World Bank publishes the indicator in the World Development Indicators from the IEA Energy Statistics Data Browser. It complements the connector's renewable-electricity-output-share dataset (the coal vs renewables decomposition of the electricity mix); the two do not necessarily sum to 100% because gas, oil, nuclear and hydro output also contribute. India (74%) and China (61%) are the most coal-reliant in 2023 while France is near zero (0.6%) thanks to nuclear and the UK is down to 1.6% after the coal phase-out. Values are null where national statistics are unavailable and are never interpolated. Units: % of total electricity output.
