Bank of Canada consumer expectations (quarterly)
Quarterly Canadian consumer-sentiment intelligence from the Bank of Canada Canadian Survey of Consumer Expectations (CSCE, keyless Valet web service): a quarter x indicator long panel of perceived and expected inflation (current, 1/2/5-year), expected and perceived wage growth, job-loss/leave/find probabilities, expected household income and spending growth, expected interest rates 1/2/5 years ahead, plus two derived indicators (expected real wage growth; spending-income growth gap) — with quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year momentum, 10-year percentile ranks and record flags, and a documented 0-100 consumer-sentiment score with its momentum. 2014Q4 onward. Caveats: the Valet master group trails the Bank's quarterly CSCE publication by about one release; survey values are share-weighted percentages as published. | Column | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| quarter | string | Reference quarter, YYYY-QN. The panel starts 2014Q4 (CSCE survey launch); the latest quarter is the latest quarter published in the Valet CSCE master group (which trails the Bank's quarterly CSCE publication by about one release). Join key with indicator_code. (unit: quarter) |
| country_code | string | ISO alpha-3 country code (CAN for every row). (unit: ISO 3166-1 alpha-3) |
| indicator_code | string | Stable machine key for the indicator (e.g. infl_expect_1y, prob_lose_job, real_wage_expectation, spending_income_gap). Join key with quarter. |
| indicator_label | string | Human-readable indicator name. |
| indicator_family | string | Indicator family: inflation_expectations, wages, labor_market, income_spending, interest_rates, or derived. |
| indicator_question | string | The CSCE survey question (or derivation rule) behind the indicator, paraphrased from the Valet seriesDetail. |
| value | float | Published value in the indicator's native unit: survey percentages for inflation/wage/income/spending/rate expectations, mean percent chances for the job probabilities, percentage points for the two derived difference indicators. Only published (quarter, indicator) cells appear — nothing is interpolated. (unit: native unit (see unit)) |
| unit | string | Native unit of value: 'percent', 'percent chance', or 'percentage points'. |
| qoq_change | float | Quarter-over-quarter change of value, in the indicator's native units. Null at each indicator's launch quarter — never interpolated. (unit: native units) |
| yoy_change | float | Change of value vs 4 quarters earlier, in the indicator's native units. Null where the 4-quarter lag is unpublished. (unit: native units) |
| pctile_10y | float | Percentile of value within its trailing 40-quarter window (inclusive), minimum 20 observations: 100*(rank-1)/(n-1), average ranks, ascending — a high percentile means a hot reading for that indicator. Null before the 20-observation gate. (unit: percentile) |
| record_high_10y_flag | integer | 1 when value equals the trailing-40-quarter maximum (inclusive, minimum 20 observations). (unit: binary) |
| record_low_10y_flag | integer | 1 when value equals the trailing-40-quarter minimum (inclusive, minimum 20 observations). (unit: binary) |
| csce_consumer_sentiment_score | float | Documented 0-100 consumer-sentiment composite: the mean of six direction-aligned components (expected spending growth, expected income growth, expected wage growth, job-finding probability aligned positive; 1-year inflation expectations and job-loss probability aligned negative by 1 - minmax), each min-maxed over its full published history (degenerate histories score neutral 0.5), times 100. Null when fewer than 4 of the 6 components are published that quarter. Higher = stronger consumer sentiment. (unit: 0-100 score) |
| sentiment_score_qoq_pts | float | Quarter-over-quarter change of csce_consumer_sentiment_score, in score points. (unit: score points) |
| valet_series_id | string | Valet series id behind the indicator (e.g. CES_C1_SHORT_TERM, CES_C4_LOSE_JOB), or DERIVED:<code> for the two derived indicators. |
| row_hash | string | Deterministic 16-hex row hash of indicator_code + quarter (idempotency). |
